Job description

Company Overview:

XY Planning Network (XYPN) is the leading organization for fee-only financial advisors who want to serve their Gen X and Gen Y peers, providing comprehensive financial planning services for a monthly subscription fee and without product sales or asset minimums. The Network offers a virtual community for new and established financial advisors who want to serve a younger clientele, and provides its members compliance support services, marketing support, business tools and templates, a wide range of technology solutions, and our various service lines.

XYPN was nationally recognized as one of The 346 Best Places to Work in 2019 by Inc. magazine. In addition, we have earned accolades in 2018, 2019, and 2020 as one of the Fastest-Growing Private Companies in Montana and in the US by Inc. magazine. This is an opportunity to join a rapidly growing company that is reshaping the financial services industry for the better.

Our mission is to “help people live their great lives”. We have the honor of helping tens of thousands of clients achieve their great lives by supporting the financial advisors who guide them in the financial planning process. We also have the privilege of helping over 1,200 financial planning entrepreneurs achieve their great lives by supporting their businesses' start and growth. Finally, we have the pleasure of helping our 60+ team members live their great lives by being a place where they want to come to work, supporting their unique life circumstances, and ultimately making a difference in the world so we can all leave our mark.

About XYPN Internships:

As an intern on Team XYPN (the best team ever in our totally unbiased opinion), you’ll gain hands-on experience and hone real world skills while getting an inside look at the financial services industry. As industry disruptors, we thrive on challenging the status quo, creating innovative solutions, and doing things differently. When it comes to serving fee-for-service advisors, everyone on Team XYPN plays a unique role but we are all committed to a shared mission: helping people live their great lives. Are you ready to be part of a talented team of go-getters, ahead-of-the-curvers, and think-outside-the-boxers? Then an XYPN internship might be the perfect fit for you.

Bookkeeping & Accounting Interns

As an FA Bean Counters (FABC) Intern, you’ll learn the ins and outs of bookkeeping for financial advisory firms as you play an active role in the day-to-day operations of this XYPN service line and work alongside an anything-but-boring team of bookkeeping gurus.

Responsibilities

  • Books, books, and more books—you’ll do everything from categorizing and reconciling transactions bimonthly to tracking the progress of books you’ve been assigned
  • Did we mention books? You’ll work with FABC’s Manager to get the information you need to complete, you guessed it, books
  • Oh, and you’ll do other stuff too, like miscellaneous bookkeeping tasks and 1099 projects

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Familiarity with accounting and/or bookkeeping practices—whether you’ve taken classes or you have real world experience, you at least need to know a thing (or better yet two) about bookkeeping

The Deets

  • Start Date: October 29, 2020
  • Status: Part Time (15 - 20 hours/week w/flexible schedule)
  • Location: remote
  • Department: Compliance
  • Reports to: Dan Keslin, Manager of FA Bean Counters

Compliance Interns

As a Compliance Intern, you’ll immerse yourself (no toe-dipping here) in the compliance and regulatory landscape of the financial services industry as you play a hand in the day-to-day operations of our initial registration service and our Annual ADV Update Process for hundreds (we’re talking 600-800) of XYPN advisors across the country.

Responsibilities

You will work closely with our ADV update gurus to help execute our Annual ADV Update service by:

  • Collecting and inputting data like it’s your job (because it is)
  • Updating compliance documents for members
  • Emailing with members (this part is especially fun!) to keep them in the loop throughout the update process and up to speed on the status of their update
  • Filing revised documents (it’s more satisfying than you think) and emailing members a copy for their records

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience with data entry—data doesn’t have to be your best friend, but it certainly can’t be your enemy
  • Familiarity with the G Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Bagworthy communication skills
  • A deep appreciation (some might even say respect) for process
  • An almost annoying attentiveness to detail

The Deets

  • Start Date: October 29, 2020
  • Status: Part Time (15 - 20 hours/week w/flexible schedule)
  • Location: remote
  • Department: Compliance
  • Reports to: Krystal Schmitz, ADV Update Project Manager

Events 'Intern'

As a “Fungineer” on XYPN’s People & Culture team, you'll quite literally be an engineer of fun. From leading outdoor events to hosting virtual happy hours, you’ll celebrate our culture and spotlight our “Be Well Being You” core value. (This “Intern” position is a bit different as candidates are not required to be students.)

Responsibilities

  • Help with everything from ideation to execution of events, parties, activities, and all things fun
  • Swag handler—as a professional gift giver, you’ll coordinate and mail swag and supplies to remote teams
  • Plan and promote ongoing and impromptu weekly activities
  • Coordinate scheduling and virtual invites for remote events
  • Collaborate with team members to give the people what they want

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • A passion for people and connection
  • Familiarity with the G Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Borderline superhuman attention to detail
  • Zealousness for variety and adventure (you should feel as at home on a Zoom party as you do on a trail or ski hill)
  • An innate desire to get sh!t done (and to get it done on schedule!)

The Deets

  • Start Date: immediately
  • Status: Part Time (15 - 20 hours/week w/flexible schedule)
  • Location: Bozeman, MT
  • Department: People + Culture
  • Reports to: Ryan Watin, Director of People + Culture

Finance Intern

As an Intern for XYPN’s Finance Team, you’ll learn what it takes to manage the financial aspects of a fast-paced and rapidly growing company as you help with everything from member billing to account reconciliation to financial reporting (and everything in between!).

Responsibilities

  • Help with membership billing, and answer member questions and requests in true XYPN fashion—quickly, kindly, and accurately
  • Validate user reports against our internal user lists within GoogleSheets—you’d much rather triple-check than double-check
  • Help with accounts payable functions and processing invoices
  • Reconcile monthly credit card charges
  • Help with weekly bookkeeping and reconciliation of bank accounts
  • Help prepare monthly financial reports
  • Lend your talents to other major projects (like software transitions)

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Details and numbers are among your list of favorite things ever
  • You tackle problems analytically, strategically, and head on
  • You don’t just seek solutions—you create them
  • You’re not one to shy away from a challenge
  • Fast-paced environments don’t intimidate you—they excite you
  • Your communication skills are unrivaled

The Deets

  • Start Date: October 29, 2020
  • Status: Part Time (15 - 20 hours/week w/flexible schedule)
  • Location: remote
  • Department: Finance
  • Reports to: Heather Walstad, Director of Finance

HR Intern

As an HR Intern on XYPN’s People & Culture team, you'll help optimize the entire team member lifecycle, with a special focus on recruiting and talent acquisition (and plenty of opportunities to flex your HR guns along the way). The best part? You’ll make a meaningful impact on current and prospective team members and other interns like you as you work to enhance the already too-good-to-be-true quality of life on Team XYPN.

Responsibilities

  • Help manage the candidate experience, corresponding with future team members
  • As a time management guru, you'll assist in coordinating interviews and work samples
  • Participate and contribute to all team member committees (diversity, wellness, fungineers)
  • Assist in scheduling team events, trainings, surveys, and meetings
  • Connect team member questions with answers
  • Other duties as assigned (no two days are the same in HR)

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • A passion for people and connection
  • Familiarity with the G Suite and Microsoft Office
  • The only thing you love more than time management is attention to detail
  • While you prefer processes and routine, you can easily switch gears and gladly welcome a bit of randomness in your day
  • You're not just good, not just great, but the best at communicating

The Deets

  • Start Date: immediately
  • Status: Part Time (15 - 20 hours/week w/flexible schedule)
  • Location: Bozeman, MT preferred; remote possible
  • Department: People + Culture
  • Reports to: Ryan Watin, Director of People + Culture

Customer Relations Intern

As a Member Success (Customer Relations) Intern on Team XYPN, you’ll learn what it takes to provide a seriously stellar customer experience as you tackle projects that challenge your mind and put your critical thinking skills to the test, learn from and build lasting connections with seasoned professionals, and have one heckuva time in the process.

Responsibilities

  • It might not sound glamorous, but onboarding and offboarding are a big part of the member experience at XYPN, and it’s actually pretty fun! You’ll roll up your sleeves and dig into our CRM as you onboard members daily (yay!) and offboard them monthly.
  • We’re big on email here at XYPN. You’ll collaborate cross-departmentally to ensure that members are actually receiving—and opening—our emails. In the process, you’ll learn the art of client communications and will dip your toe in the world of marketing platforms.
  • There are a lot of data nerds at XYPN, and the Member Success team is full of them. You’ll collect and manage data to help tell the story of membership and to better understand the member experience. We eat data for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so come hungry.
  • Remember that bit about data? Well, all that data lives in our CRM. You’ll help keep our CRM up to date, assisting with everything from data imports to configuration to reporting (and everything in between!), becoming well-versed in database management along the way.
  • XYPN members have come to expect the highest caliber of content from us, and we’re proud to deliver on that expectation. Our extensive content collection is designed with one goal in mind: help advisors launch, run, and grow successful RIAs. But that kind of content doesn’t just manage itself; that’s where you come in. You’ll help with a variety of content management tasks, from identifying guest speakers to transcription—the whole gamut of content creation!

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Relevant experience or coursework in business administration and/or related field(s)
  • We'd love it if you had prior work with podcasting
  • While not a dealbreaker, experience with CRM software, Hubspot or similar marketing platforms is a plus

The Deets

  • Start Date: October 29, 2020

  • Location: remote
